Augusta family seeks answers from GBI about decayed body

Honorable Coroners and Deputy Coroners,

As District 2 Director of The Georgia Coroner’s Association I wanted to take this opportunity to caution each of you about the importance of documenting and photographing ALL cases that you handle.  Please take the time to read each of these articles that describe an incident that was devastating to a family that lost a loved one.  As Coroner/Deputy Coroner the family entrusts their loved one to your care.  Had our office not had the proper photographic evidence and written documentation the blame for this incident surely would have fallen on the Coroner’s Office.  Due to proper photography, documentation and chain of custody, the responsibility for this tragedy falls elsewhere.  This is the second incident of this nature that I have encountered, the first of which involved a funeral home that was subsequently closed down by the state.  Again the photographs, documentation and chain of custody placed the responsibility elsewhere.

Mark Bowen

Chief Deputy

Richmond County Coroner’s Office
